A 12-year-old student from Florida was arrested for breaking wind during class and disturbing his classmates by shutting off their computers at Stuar’s Spectrum Jr./Sr. High School. The police called this a “deliberately passed gas to disrupt the class” and “disruption of a school function”

County Sheriff’s Office report, a copy of which you’ll find below, notes that the 4′ 11″ offender admitted that he “continually disrupted his classroom environment by breaking wind and shutting off several computers.”

The student was placed under arrest but released shortly after to his mother. Get useful psychotherapeutic interventions with psychiatry books and proper living.

Kid looks like a real gem. Nothing wrong with giving him a tour of the jail. Make it easier the next 10-20 times he is there. I appreciate this proactive training of our juvenile delinquents.

I didn’t know the police had that much time on their hand, time to fire some o them. Maybe they won’t be so useless anymore.

What every happen to in school detention? Police action is not warranted for a student passing gas. It is also waste of police resources. This type of thing can easily be handled in house by the school. The Local Police Department Should Be Ashamed of Themselves. The arresting officer should have used better judgment and told the school to stop wasting his time.

  5. Respect says:

I would have called the police myself if that were my son. Kids need to learn some respect. I hope he learned a lesson.

    • Deidredit says:

Really? you would have called the police? So you would rather them waste their time and his because of something ridiculous he did in class? Meanwhile, there are several other crimes probably happening in the area at the same time, while police are too busy taking care of your child’s flatulence issue. How about we do the parenting ourselves instead of calling the police to handle it.

    • Brandon says:

You’re a crazy parent, no wonder why your children hate you. Passing gas is something that we can’t control sometimes so you need help. Seriously

LOL that’s some funny stuff, I’m happy to see our tax dollars at work, in arresting 12 year olds for being nothing but themselves. The kid is 12!! Get over it.

Second, who gives anyone the right to say that the parents for that 12 year old should die? How ironic that someone should say that.

On the plus side, we get to see our fine men going to work and arresting 12 year olds, since evidently the school districts can’t even handle their own problems.

nothing mentioned here about the reality of a human function such as passing gas, its a normal human function the average person passes gas at least 15 times a day.i do belive however the student should be repremanded for his behavior on disrupting the classroom.but passing gas , come on officers and school officials, lets get real and do a reality check do you not too pass gas??? in the school office and police station?? the first time my kid ever got arrested for passing gas ill tell you it would be the last time—i wouldnt stop till something was done about it but disrupting the class is another whole different story ever heard of standing in corners or cleaning the class room after class was finished or detention?? the schools needs a whole new different approched to the kids now days it looks to me they need to let the kids teach them for awhile, maybe they will learn how to handle these situatins on their own without calling the police, the world has more problems on its hands than passing gas in school – gas by the way sometimes just happens it cant be forced – if its not there , its not there– i too didnt know the police had so much time on their hands either.hope there wasnt and emergency somewhere while they were arresting this 12 yr. old boy , what ever happened to sitting in the principals office till class was over?

To gas is natural….stop overreacting about such a silly thing. The way in which the school and the police overreacted is just down right disturbing…

  17. Anonymous says:

Ok, I think that yeah he does need to be taught some manners, but not arrested. Thats crazy, and way out of line. He is 12, it is to be expected that the try to be funny, and seeing as i have 4 little brothers, i understand, to some extent, why they believe that fart is the funniest thing. But, for him to be arrested? That’s, as I said, way over the line. When the poor kid goes and tries to get a job, and the job sees that he was arrested, it makes it a whole lot harder to get a job, or a good school. They may not actually look into why he was arrested, and that was for farting. I think the need to loosen up a little.

  20. Charlie says:

When I was a kid, I would’ve gotten a swift kick in the a@@ for behavior like this kid. Obviously now, the teacher would be arrested, they need some type of control. I also think the headline is a little misleading, it wasn’t the farts as much as shutting down other students computers, students who may have wanted to actually learn! The old saying of one kid taking attention away from the rest of the class applies here. Nothing wrong with putting a little scare into these troublemakers. Maybe if more school districts had a similar policy, we’d see less videos on the Internet of students beating up teachers, and themselves.

  23. Mayor McCheese says:

i should have been arrested every single day of my first two years of highschool [went to an all-boys school, farting was funny, and there were no girls to impress]
This is so fucking dumb, but I’m glad these cops weren’t hanging around, preventing crime with their presence, or doing some real police work and stop actual crime, I’m also happy that the school spent at least a full day consulting with lawyers to issue a full statement.

  24. Anthony says:

I think you’re all vastly overreacting to this. The officer was a school resource officer – in other words, a police officer ASSIGNED to the school. They didn’t “call the cops” on this kid; he was being disruptive (by shutting off computers), so the officer assigned to the campus dealt with it.

The passing gas seems weird to include, but if you look at the charge on the report, it was for disrupting school functions, which his computer behavior definitely classifies as.

Let’s not make this into something absurd.

    • Sasha says:

The arresting officer may have been the school resource officer, but there are multiple cops in the picture so they obviously called in more officers. Also I don’t think anyone commenting is overreacting (except maybe the few who said the parents/teachers should die) What is an overreaction is the fact that the school had a student ARRESTED for disturbing class, instead of punishing him or suspending him. I definitely think that is a gross overreaction. It’s not the cops jobs to keep people from misbehaving in school, it is the schools, unless of course there is violence involved. I think that this is so stupid, and now this poor kid will have an arrest record for doing what the majority of kids do growing up…act like jackasses.

I think this is a great idea. Children need to learn to behave. Teacher’s haven’t any way to make them without possibly being sued. Perhaps the young man had detention before that had not corrected the problem.

If I was a student in the class I would not like to be farted on or have my computer shut off while I was working.

    • Sasha says:

Then suspend him… why screw up his record for something he did when he was twelve? I did a lot of dumb things when I was twelve and I didn’t have to get arrested to turn out ok

  27. Anonymous says:

You people are idiots. It’s a fucking kid. Detention would be plenty. If it gets worse, suspension. Getting arrested for that? that is bullshit. Schools are way too fucking strict. I hated it back then and everyone hates it now. And it keeps getting worse. I would complain to the school til that shit got changed.

  28. Mike says:

Its too late. This is absurd. As a teacher i would have been embarrassed to have to call police (from down the hall or across town)because a child passed gas in my class. Only in America.

He lived in canada, and the police arrested him because some neighbors who didn’t like him called him in on “running a meth lab”, he was arrested, had all his chemistry materials taken away(valued over $4000″, and now that there is no proof that he had meth, is kept under house arrest until further evidence is brought in. That was Canada. If you are British, you can’t claim you are a member of a perfect country. If you’re polish…well…carry on.

Interrupting a school function, I believe that applies to assemblies and graduations. “Normal” Classroom interruptions should not necessitate arrest, with an associated juvenile record. Using a sledgehammer on a gnat. Even if he were a habitual offender, in school suspension, 3 or 10 days suspension is reasonable. Another example of our failing school system directing resources poorly.

As a schoolteacher myself (ok, but not in the USA)… just tell him not to do it, send him to see the principal, make him sit outside the class and do some other work, give him a detention, tell his parents, in an extreme case suspend or expel the kid. Only call the police if he’s selling drugs at school (and even then, only after you’ve talked with his parents) or assaulting other students.

This just goes to show that teaching staff and school officials no longer no how to handle themselves. What happened to good ol’ fashioned parent teacher conferences or just basic discipline(i.e. detention)? Obviously this kid is distracting his class as a call for attention. Calling the police is only making matters worse for the poor kid and it shows how little control the people who are “teaching” young children actually posses.

Only in Florida. What a redneck state.

  43. Jim says:

Passing gas should have been ignored as it is only a way to attract attention. Turning off computers is another matter, but one that should have been handled by the school, not the police.

  44. K. M. says:

Well okay, as flabbergasted as I am that they’d actually take a kid to jail for something like this, I’m surprisingly more concerned that there are people who feel the need to assert their supposed intelligence and superiority by pointing out, for example, that there’s a space in “douche bags.”

This is the biggest pile of trash I’ve ever read in my life, so of course I”m going to say something, shall we begin?
first off, there will always be children in every single school, that will interrupt a class thinking they are a jokester. I’m pretty sure your kid is not a saint either, things like this are part of living and growing up as well as being a parent. As for the “safe” side, I’m most certain that a child being disruptive has never killed or mentally damaged someone, actually quite the opposite, for it usually plays out as such: kid does something stupid, teacher warns him, kid laugh, kid does something stupid again, teacher sends him to the office, class carries on. disruptive kids do not rob people and end up homeless simply cause they were disruptive. and secondly, there’s no such thing as a “useless” child, wtf how could someone with a kid of their own think a child could be useless? do you think the same thing about yours? or are you one of them egomaniacs who thinks your shit don’t stink and youre the most perfect people in the world? you sound more messed up then that kids “messed up halo playing parents”

  53. LOL says:

AHAHAHAHA!!! Man if you all went to my school back in the day, hell you might get a death sentence if passing gas is SUCH a CRIME! WOW! I shall never fart again. What if the kid constantly belched and had a laugh bout it? Would that get him arrested too? Or is belching ok and not considered disruptive? Even massive fights were dealt with by the principal and student teacher faculty round here. Did the kid endanger anyones life?
    Come on man, grow up!
So he switched off some computers? Give him detention, tell his parents/guardian and let them deal with him.
Unless they were just trying to inflict fear on the children, but then again, isn’t that going a little too far to get their message of discipline across? I thought Americans had limitations too?

second, the officers(people who like take it up the arse) put !handcuffs! on the boy, i mean what the bloody hell, do they think that will prevent him from farting?

they think that will serve him a lesson to respect authorities, but it rather serves a lesson to more people to question those authorities

In response to the 2/02/09 16:47, the cops ARE rather useless. Think about it; If you get mugged, there's no way a cop will save you unless he/she happens to stroll down the street and see you (don't hope for that miracle). If you defend your health or life from a violent mugging and somehow succeed, YOU will be arrested for assaulting someone because there is no proof that you were defending yourself unless you convince an onlooker to stick around (I highly doubt the mugger would let you ask someone to be a witness, much less speak altogether). We are left with no choice but to throw ourselves at the mercy of a worthless excuse for public service and hope we don't die either at the hands of the mugger or the cop. (although the cop may let you live, you may spend undeserved time in a cage with the very people you were imprisoned for defending yourself against) Whew…done ranting for now.
