No Charges For Cops Who Beat Up a Motorist

Posted on: February 21st, 2013 3 Comments

Three Denver police officers are not facing any charges for the beating of the then 19-year-old Alexander Landau in an incident that took place in 2009. After a federal lawsuit Landau filed in 2011, the Justice Department has ruled there were no civil rights violations in this case.

Landau was beaten and threatened after questioning the cops’ authority to search his car trunk when he got pulled over. Cpl. Randy Murr and officers Ricky Nixon and Tiffany Middleton beat him up and pointed a gun to his head. Landau, who is African-American, was racially discriminated and insulted.

“I think back — I was called a n**ger, I was hit by a flashlight, I was hit with a radio, had a gun put to my head — I just don’t really know what more evidence could’ve been produced…”, said Landau.

The federal lawsuit ended with a $795,000 settlement, but FBI and department representatives told Landau there was insufficient evidence for federal charges. Up to this date, Randy Murr and Ricky Nixon have been involved in several other police brutality incidents.

Baltimore Cop Facing Prison After Killing a Man With Taser

A domestic dispute ended tragically when Baltimore County police officer intervened and tased one of the family members to death. Shocking the suspect ten times in a row caused him to die from a cardiac arrest in front of his parents and brother.

The 40-year-old Ryan Meyers was suffering from bipolar disorder which made his behavior volatile and violent at times, and one of the fights with his brother and father was so intense his mother had to call the police. When the cops arrived and ordered Meyers to drop the baseball bat he was holding, he refused to listen to them. One of the cops tased him repeatedly until he fell to the floor. It took two discharges to make Meyers drop the bat and one more to fall down, and while he was on the floor the cop continued to tase him seven more times. After ten shocks, Meyers went into cardiac arrest and even though the paramedics tried to revive him, he died.

Meyers’ brother claims that the cops didn’t give his brother enough time to obey their orders before using the taser. One of the cops’ testimony revealed that Meyers’ body went stiff during the tasing but the other officer didn’t stop shocking him.

It’s up to the jury to decide whether tasing a suspect ten times counts as excessive use of force. Paul Mayhew, Baltimore County Police attorney, defended the cop’s actions and said there is still no connection between the tasing and death since there are many factors yet to be determined, such as an underlying heart condition that could’ve caused Meyers’ death.

Chicago Cop Arrests Two Reporters For Doing Their Job

Posted on: February 8th, 2013 7 Comments

Two members of the media were taken into custody and insulted by a Chicago police officer while reporting on a murder of a 6-year-old girl. NBC photographer Donte Williams and WGN reporter Dan Ponce were handcuffed just outside Mt. Sinai hospital where the young victim of a fatal shooting had been taken to. The journalists had already moved away from the building at police request and they were shooting from the median sidewalk between the lanes when one of the cops approached them. He insisted they should move even further across the street even though the reporters were told by hospital security it was alright for them to stand there.

The visibly agitated cop started cursing and among other things denied them the freedom of speech. He said “Your First Amendment right can be terminated if you’re creating a scene or whatever. Your First Amendment right has got limitations.”

When the reporters asked in what way they were creating a scene, he told them their presence was creating it. One of the reporters exclaimed they were only doing their job and the other mentioned a lawsuit, which enraged the cop even more. Yelling out curses, he decided to deal with the situation by arresting Williams and Ponce and detaining them in the police car, threatening with trespassing charges. After a while, the handcuffed journalists were released without charge. The whole incident was shot by several other reporters and uploaded online.

Cops Kill 5 Caged Dogs at Animal Shelter

Posted on: February 6th, 2013 2 Comments

Volunteers at an animal shelter in Selma, California were horrified by police officers shooting and killing five caged pit bulls scheduled for euthanasia. The dogs were dropped off at the shelter by a couple who claimed they were too aggressive, and were supposed to be euthanized.

Selma police sergeant called the veterinarian to euthanize them, but since he couldn’t come over the sergeant decided to transport the dogs to the vet clinic himself. Accompanied by another cop he tried to enter the cage and the dogs rushed in at the gate. Frightened he will get attacked by the dogs, the cop took his gun out and shot all five dogs dead.

While the authorities keep reassuring the volunteers that this kind of incident won’t happen again and they’re taking measures to prevent it in the future, many questions have been raised about this case.

Outraged people commenting on the shelter’s Facebook page were asking why five dangerous dogs were put in a single cage, and the personnel replied that they were actually separated in two cages, which doesn’t match Selma Police Chief Myron Dyck’s story.

Perhaps the most tragic consequence is that Selma animal shelter is losing people’s support after this, which could mean a death sentence to other dogs who are kept alive thanks to the donations and volunteer work.

pregnant woman dies in jail

The U.S. domestic drug law enforcement operations have taken their third victim this year with the death of a 33-year-old woman arrested for lacking prescription for her painkillers. Pregnant Jamie Lynn Russell came into a hospital in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, complaining about severe abdominal pain.

The hospital staff had trouble calming her down because she was in too much pain to even lie down, so they asked a police officer to assist them. The cop searched Russell and found two prescription pills she didn’t have a prescription for and decided to arrest her for drug possession.

She received a medical release that stated she was fit for incarceration, but was found dead in her cell less than two hours later.

The autopsy showed that Russell died from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, which is a complication of pregnancy where the embryo develops outside of the uterus.

Her life could have been saved if she was given adequate medical help on time, but the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has cleared the officers and medical staff of any criminal charges.

Garvin County sheriff Larry Rhodes gave his condolences to Russell’s family, claiming there was nothing his jail staff could’ve done differently.

Oakland Cops Point Guns at a Sleeping Baby

The latest report on Oakland Police Department misconduct made by independent monitor Robert Warshaw has revealed numerous irregularities and several shocking incidents involving Oakland cops.

Perhaps the most improper use of force took place during a house search, when two police officers pointed their guns at a sleeping 19-month-old baby. It was obvious that the child couldn’t pose any threat to them, but they put its life in danger anyway. According to the report, the crime they were investigating involved a misdemeanor offense.

Warshaw didn’t include any other details about this incident, but he listed several complaints that include unnecessary use of force and general hostility towards the residents as well as failing to resolving Occupy Oakland related investigations. The officers’ refusal to cooperate with internal affairs has prevented many individuals from being held responsible for their actions. Supervisors were reluctant to take disciplinary action even when presented with clear evidence like videos of incidents.

Robert Warshaw turned the report in to federal judge Thelton Henderson who is currently choosing a compliance director to supervise Oakland Police Department.

According to this survey where members of police forces participated and made by accelerated degree website a considerable police body admits several cases of misconduct during their serve.

52% of police questioned agreed with this statement: It’s not unusual for a police officer to turn a blind eye to improper conduct by other officers.

49% feel that the only way a ‘criminal’ would receive any punishment was to punish the individual him/herself.

While these number will shock someone, others are not surprised at all.
