A 5-year-old K-9 unit police dog named Bandit was left in a police sport utility vehicle and died after 13 hours. The police car belong to Sgt. Tom Lovejoy and it was parked outside his house when this happened. Bandit lived with Lovejoy and was trained to protect officers and to sniff out explosives.

The temperature was 109 degrees that day, and about 140 degrees inside the vehicle, and the dog obviously died of the extreme heat. Dogs can’t sweat, they only cool by panting. Lovejoy is very upset about the whole situation, but he can still face department punishment.

In March, a Phoenix police dog was left in a department vehicle and died. Police have finished an investigation but would not comment because the case remains under final review.

  4. BS says:

i say bullshit, how in the fuck can someone FORGET a dog in their car on a day like that? he was obviously doing something stupid, just like every fuckin cop who gets away with shit like this. it's unacceptable the lack of respect and caring police officers have, especially towards an animal who depends on them to take care of them and keep them healthy. it's almost as bad as leaving your child in the car. someone should put that fucker in a car for 13 hours in 109 heat and see what happens to his fuckin fagot ass.

mans best friend,,was given to us by the lord,,to keep us from being lonely,, not to make him suffer,or to put him in harms way, over any kinda training, as anyone knows that dog would take a bullet for his master, and that isn't right..let alone letting him fry in a car..im sorry im not into drugs, but i just don't believe training a dog to do your dangerous work for you..a dog wasn't ment to do are jobs for us,,but to keep us company..and to warn us of harm,,may god bless that poor dog,,t.s.

Great post, I have to agree with Mike here, in that the hardest solutions are often the most rewarding in the end.

  10. no kidding. the irony and hypocrisy is that if you harm one of those dogs you will be charged as though you hurt a police officer as they have passed laws that make police dogs the same as a police officer. kill a police dog and you will be charged with killing a cop. and also, if i leave and forget my dog in a car to the point that it dies, i will be charged with animal cruelty. but these pigs get away with this shit all the time. this dumb ignorant pig should be charged with manslaughter. or negligent homicide. after all, the dog is a police officer, not just a dog, right? fucking hypocrites. thats why the system and the police get no respect. at least not from any sensible person.

I agree with the Equlaizer. He is responsable for the death of an officer and should be charged the same way an ordinary citizen would be charged for the death of an officer.

    That’s fucking tragic.
But since he’s a cop, the most that will happen is that he’ll get some paid vacation and perhaps be re-assigned.
Meanwhile, citizens have been convicted to jail for harming a K9 unit, the dogs are seen as police officers.

    You see the hypocrisy?

As an animal rescuer, activist & advocate, this police officer, better be charged accordingly. The dog was also considered part of the force, which means he died in the line of duty and the officer should be charged for that.I’m going to pass this along to all my fellow rescue friends. If this officer is not charged accordingly, the world of animal lovers is going to go nuts!

They even kill their own dogs…

  22. Garnet says:

He should face the same penalty that a regular citizen would get for the same crime and then double it. This cop must be a total idiot or a complete drunk/druggy. In any case he has no business working in law enforcement

  23. missy says:

all i can say is that usa police is full of shit, stupidity, arrogance. number one in the world for brutality. killing dogs, cats, name it. and at the expense of taxpayers money. sheesh… you pay them to abuse taxpayers!
